On legacy Wolf dual fuel ranges with text error messages, such as the DF series, HOT appears when the oven is too hot for the selected mode, after a power failure, from a J2 connection problem, or when the RTD oven sensor is out of specification. Owners see HOT on the display and the oven may stop heating or refuse to start another mode until it cools.
1. Turn the oven off and leave the door closed until it cools. 2. Wait at least an hour, then check that HOT has gone from the display. 3. Start a normal bake and see if it behaves. 4. If HOT appears on a cold oven, call us. Do not open the range to check the connection yourself.
If the oven was mid-cycle, the cavity can still be hot when power returns, and the controller blocks other modes. Let it cool and the message often clears on its own.
Then the sensor or its connection is the likelier cause. The RTD sensor may read out of specification, or the J2 connection may be loose. That needs a technician.
The message itself is protective. Running an oven that truly overheats is the real risk, so we suggest leaving it off until a cold-oven reading is confirmed.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
