Why Won’t the Igniter on My Wolf Range Light the Burner?

A Wolf burner that sparks and sparks without catching usually points to a worn igniter or a dirty port. Here is how we narrow it down and what you can safely check first.

You turn a red knob, hear the steady tick of the spark, and nothing happens. On a Wolf range this is one of the calls we take most often in Houston kitchens, and the cause is rarely mysterious. The spark has to jump a very small gap at the edge of the burner, and anything that weakens it or blocks it will stop the gas from catching.

The two usual causes

  • A worn igniter. Each light-up is a tiny electrical arc, and after years of daily cooking the tip can wear until the spark is too weak to do its job.
  • A fouled port. Grease, boil-overs, food crumbs and moisture collect right where the spark crosses. Even a thin film in that gap can be enough to interrupt ignition.

A safe look before you book

With the range switched off and the grates cool, lift the burner cap and inspect both the port and the small igniter tip. If you see crust or residue, wipe it away with a soft cloth and let everything dry fully before you try again. Reseat the cap so it sits flat; a cap that rocks or sits crooked can also keep the flame from catching evenly.

If the burner still clicks without lighting after a careful cleaning, the igniter itself or the spark module behind it is the more likely culprit. The good news is that this is a contained repair on the burner side of the range. It does not involve the main control system, and it is usually a straightforward part replacement once we confirm which piece has worn out.

When to stop and call instead

If you notice a gas smell, or a burner that lights late with a soft pop, leave that burner off and do not keep trying it.
