What 88 / 8.8. means

On Wolf V Series cooktop hoods such as the VW30S, VW36S, VI42S, and VW45G, a display showing 88 or 8.8. with every LED lit is not a normal reading. Wolf lists no owner fix for it, and service is needed. The owner sees all indicators glowing and the hood may not respond to its controls the way it should. Nothing shown there is a setting you can change.

Common causes of 88 / 8.8.

  • Control or display electronics stuck in a test-like state
  • Control board needing service
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the hood off with its control. 2. Switch off the hood breaker for a minute, then restore it. 3. Watch whether the display returns to normal. 4. Do not remove covers or filters to look inside. 5. If 88 or 8.8. returns, leave the hood off and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • There is no owner fix for this display, so repeated resets only delay the repair.
  • It points to the hood electronics, which sit in the housing above the cooktop.
  • We inspect and quote the price in writing first, and give a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

88 / 8.8.88 / 8.8. questions
Does 88 mean a number of minutes or speed?

No. With all LEDs lit, the display is showing a full test pattern rather than a setting. It is a sign the hood needs service.

Can I still use the hood?

The controls may not respond properly, so we do not recommend relying on it. You can switch it off at the breaker until a visit, and use a window for ventilation.

Will resetting the breaker fix it?

One reset is harmless and worth trying. If the display comes back showing 88 or 8.8., there is nothing more an owner can safely do, and we can quote the repair in writing first.
