What E5 means

Wolf CT induction cooktops of the earlier CTI generation, like the CT30 and CT36 sizes, use E5 for an open ambient thermistor, meaning the temperature sensor circuit reads as broken. The cooktop does not record it until it sees five minutes of consecutive open readings while a burner is active. After that it enters lock mode and shows E5 in the timer display. The communication board is involved in this reading.

Common causes of E5

  • Ambient thermistor circuit open or its connection loose
  • Communication board not reading the sensor correctly
  • Lock mode left active after the open reading was recorded
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn off all burners. 2. Wait a few minutes, then switch the cooktop breaker off for one minute and back on. 3. Try a burner again and see whether E5 and the lock return. 4. Do not remove the glass or any panels. 5. If the lock and E5 come back, book a visit so we can test the sensor circuit.

! Why to stop there
  • An open sensor circuit will not fix itself and keeps the cooktop locked.
  • Telling a bad sensor from a board problem needs meter readings inside the unit.
  • We quote in writing first and stand behind our work with a 30-day warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E5E5 questions
Why does E5 appear only after a few minutes?

The cooktop waits for five minutes of consecutive open readings during burner activation before it records the condition. That avoids false alarms from a brief glitch.

What does lock mode mean here?

The cooktop locks out heating and shows E5 in the timer display. A breaker reset sometimes clears the lock, but it returns if the sensor circuit is still open.

How does E5 compare with E4?

No. E4 is generator 3 heat sink too hot. E5 is about the ambient thermistor reading open, so the checks are different. It helps to note how long the code stays and whether it comes back at the same point.
