What E50 means

Wolf CT induction cooktops from the earlier CTI generation, including the CT30 and CT36 sizes, use E50, E51 and E52 for a generator heat sink thermistor that reads open. The control cannot measure the heat sink temperature, so it limits or stops the affected generator to stay safe. The display will read E50 and the affected area stays off. The shorted version of this reading is reported with E53, E54 and E55.

Common causes of E50

  • Heat sink thermistor circuit open or its connection loose
  • Generator board input reading the thermistor incorrectly
  • Thermistor wiring damaged
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn off every burner and let the cooktop cool fully. 2. Reset power at the breaker for one minute. 3. Try cooking at low power and see if E50 comes back. 4. Do not remove the glass or touch the wiring underneath. 5. If E50 appears again, call us for a test.

! Why to stop there
  • Without a heat sink reading the cooktop cannot protect itself properly.
  • Thermistor and board checks need a meter and access under the glass.
  • We quote in writing before work and cover our repairs with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E50E50 questions
What is a heat sink thermistor?

It is a small temperature sensor on the generator heat sink. E50 means its circuit reads as open, so the temperature is unknown. We work on Wolf appliances regularly and know which checks come first.

How does E50 differ from E53?

E50 is the thermistor reading open; E53 is the same sensor reading shorted. Opposite conditions, similar effect on cooking. You will get a clear answer on whether the repair makes sense for your age of unit.

Is it safe to keep cooking?

The cooktop may limit itself on purpose. We advise waiting for a check rather than testing it repeatedly. If a part is no longer available, we say so plainly and talk through alternatives.
