What E4 means

On earlier-generation Wolf CT induction cooktops, including the CT30 and CT36 sizes, E4 flags that the heat sink for generator 3 is too hot. That generator feeds its own burners, which are held off until it cools. The display reads E4 and some cooking positions go dead. The same warning for generator 2 appears as E3, so the number tells you which section overheated.

Common causes of E4

  • Sustained high-heat cooking on the burners fed by generator 3
  • Limited airflow or weak cooling beneath the cooktop
  • Heat sink temperature sensing out of range
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn every burner off and take off the cookware. 2. Let the cooktop rest for about 30 minutes. 3. Make sure ventilation around and below the unit is open. 4. Cut power at the breaker for a minute, then turn it back on. 5. If E4 returns after a full cool-down, call for service.

! Why to stop there
  • An overheating generator can keep tripping until the root cause is found.
  • Testing the sensing and airflow requires access to high-voltage induction parts.
  • Our price is written and agreed before work starts, and repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E4E4 questions
Which burners does E4 affect?

E4 points to generator 3, so the burners it powers are blocked while the heat sink is hot. Burners on other generators can still work.

Should I keep trying to cook through E4?

Better to wait. The cooktop shuts the section down on purpose. Let it cool, and if the code returns without heavy use, we will diagnose it.

How do E2, E3 and E4 relate?

They are siblings. E2, E3 and E4 are the heat sink warnings for generators 1, 2 and 3 in order, and each needs its own check.
