On Wolf CT electric cooktops of the CTE and CTE-2 type, such as the CT30E/S and CT36EU, a display showing 888 or 88 is a possible communication cable issue. You may also see flickering LEDs, the HOT light acting oddly, or the cooktop switching into Lock mode at random. The CTE-2 display bulletin covers it, and it is not a normal reading.
1. Turn all elements off and let the cooktop cool. 2. Turn off the breaker, wait one minute, and turn it on again. 3. Check whether the display returns to normal. 4. Do not use the cooktop if elements behave oddly. 5. Phone us and read us the full model number.
It is not a normal reading. It shows when the display and control are not communicating properly, often with flickering lights. Flickering lights, a wrong HOT indicator, or random Lock mode usually come with it and point to the same issue.
Random Lock is part of the same display issue. The cooktop reads inputs wrongly because the link is unreliable. It happens because the display and control disagree about what is happening, so inputs get misread.
We advise against it, since the HOT light may be unreliable. Call us and we will quote the price first. The HOT light may not show real element heat, so please treat the glass as hot after any cooking.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
